Teflon or Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is a synthetic fluoropolymer that has numerous useful properties and applications. Being a household name it is well known for having the lowest coefficient of friction of any solid known today. This makes it a common choice for lubricants, bearings, bushings and guides. But it is also a high molecular weight compound with hydrophobic properties so that water and water-containing substances cannot wet Teflon. Because it is highly non-reactive it is often used in liners and containers meant to handle reactive and corrosive chemicals. Additionally, Teflon / PTFE can interfere with bacteria and other infectious agents and therefore is often used in the medical and research fields to reduce contamination and infection.
