There are many considerations that are factored into selecting the right material, including its durability, its resistance to solvents, moisture or fire, its electrical conduction and whether you need to see through it.
Some materials have exceptional resistance to flame and can actually self-extinguish should they ever catch fire, reducing the release of fumes. Some have incredibly high impact strength and are exceptionally durable but are flexible in the manufacturing process, yielding many different product possibilities. And some materials can be made into both flexible and rigid products, yet are inexpensive to use.
